What does it mean to “make it” in the North? Is it the grit to survive a sub-zero winter? The creativity to turn reclaimed wood into fine art? Or the passion to bring authentic global flavors to a lakeside town?
Starting January 14 on YouTube, Making It Up North returns for an all-new season. We’re taking you inside the studios, kitchens, and workshops of the visionaries who define our region’s unique culture. From the North Shore of Lake Superior to the heart of the Twin Ports, these are the stories of perseverance, process, and the power of place.
Meet This Season’s Featured Makers
This season, we go behind the scenes with a diverse lineup of entrepreneurs, artists, and innovators:
- The Food & Drink Trailblazers: Join us at Northern Waters Smokehaus to see the art of the cure, visit Java Moose in Grand Marais for a lesson in community connection, and experience the bold Cantonese flavors of Sōl Hong Kong Cafe. We also head to the farm with Y-Ker Acres to see how they raise heritage-breed hogs in the northern climate.
- Masters of Craft: Discover the intricate woodworking of Bailey Builds and the legendary warmth of Steger Mukluks. We also dive into the world of North Shore Sauna, where the tradition of the “hot-house” meets modern innovation.
- The Visionaries: Explore the stunning visual worlds of photographer Alan Nyiri, the expansive landscapes of artist Catherine Meier, and the community-focused creativity at Alt Creative.
- The Sound of the North: We sit down with musician Misisipi Mike Wolf to hear the songs and stories that echo through the Twin Ports music scene.
