As the nation approaches its Semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the United States, we find ourselves looking closely at the threads that connect our local history to the broader American narrative. How did the ideals of the Revolution shape the Upper Midwest? And how do those founding principles continue to echo through the Northland today?
You are cordially invited to step inside the PBS North Studio on Tuesday, June 23, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM for an exclusive afternoon of history, storytelling, and community conversation.
What We’re Showcasing
This special event features a curated look at locally produced segments from the statewide collaborative public television documentary series, Minnesota and the American Story. We will be diving deep into highlights from two pivotal chapters:
- 250 Years: An exploration of Minnesota’s place in the early national timeline, tracking how early exploration, changing landscapes, and regional developments laid the groundwork for our state.
- Revolutionary Roots: A powerful look at how the ideals of liberty, self-governance, and civic responsibility live on in the Northland through deeply personal, community-driven legacies.
Whether you are a veteran, a dedicated history buff, or a curious neighbor, these segments offer an unmatched window into the cultural and military heritage of our region.
Behind the Lens with Production Manager Chris Brown
“Each of the Minnesota Public Television Association (MPTA) stations are incredible local storytellers. Together, we’re telling a story about the entire state of Minnesota and how it connects to the larger American picture. You can draw a line from any corner of the state directly to national and global events, and see how what happens here isn’t just a local story, it’s national history.” — Chris Brown, PBS North Production Manager
Following the screening, Chris Brown will take the stage for an Q&A session. Having been directly involved in the field production, filming, and storytelling of both chapters, Chris will pull back the curtain to give you a true “behind-the-scenes” look at how public media brings local history to life.
A Community Gathering & Pre-4th of July Celebration
This afternoon is about more than just watching a screen, it’s about gathering as a community. With the Fourth of July right around the corner, it is the perfect time to reflect on what this legacy means right here at home.
Join us in the studio for:
- Delicious BBQ and great conversation with fellow public media supporters.
- Community Spotlights: Meet and chat with representatives from our incredible local partners, the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center and Duluth Honor Flight, to learn about their vital work honoring our region’s veterans.
